Volcanoes- Inquiry Project

This term, for our inquiry projects, we got a lot of freedom. We were able to choose from the three topics, animal adaptions, space and natural disasters. Your probably wondering, how does each individual student choose their own topic? Well it works like this; each teacher from middle to senior get their own topic. Then each student chooses what topic that they would enjoy most. As you can possibly already tell, my topic is natural disasters.

Of all the natural disasters, I have chosen to do……. VOLCANOES!!! Volcanoes interest me because I have always found explosions and eruptions extremely fascinating. I also know absolutely nothing about volcanoes so I thought it would be good to learn something new.

I have also been thinking about some possible questions about volcanoes for my project:

  • What safety measures do you have to take in the case of an erupting volcano?
  • How are volcanoes caused?
  • When  are volcanoes most likely to occur?
  • What affects do volcanoes have on people?
  • Where are the most deadly volcanoes located and why are they the most deadly?

So they are my possible questions and feel free to make question suggestions in a comment!

Free Friday, Letter to my Principal

A while ago, as apart of our homework, we had to write about a rule that we wanted to keep. It was supposed to be a persuasive text and this is my persuasive letter to my principal.

Dear Mr. Gleeson,

I’m utterly disgusted with the thought of Free Friday being taken away. I strongly urge you to consider my reasons to keep Free Friday.

Firstly, the people who play on the grass on Free Friday definitely use it productively. I am one the people who adore Free Friday and when my friends and I are on it we do tricks like walkovers, handsprings and attempted aerials. I can strongly assure you that we do NOT use the time to sit and talk as we can do that on the other four days of the week.

Another reason is that on this one day of the week, everyone who plays ball games can play on the lower. The things we do on the grass certainly cannot be played on the lower as it is a danger to us because we could easily fall or slip on the concrete of and get a horrific injury. Many people expect us to play on the lower and they clearly don’t understand the hazards that we will face. Our wonderful school is all about safety, which is why you should back us up to keep us safe.

Finally there is absolutely no sense of exclusion on Free Friday as we allow everyone to join in or pick their own game to play as long it does not involve a ball. Unlike a game of soccer or football, the games that are played on Free Friday do not take up the full space; therefore many people can play what they want.

All I am asking is for one day that is free for everyone to enjoy. This is why I strongly urge you to keep Free Friday.

Kind Regards

Mia, on behalf of many, many people.

On Friday it was grandparents day and we got to show our grandparents what we have been doing in school.

I had four of my grandparents turn up and it was great to show them what we have been doing. I mainly showed my grandparents, my blog, the singing bowl, my old project, camp work and I also showed them my writing piece on beauty and the beast. I really enjoyed showing my grandparents my work and I think they enjoyed it too.

I had my Nana, Pa, Grandma and Poppy come to grandparents day and that is the most I’ve ever had. I also wrote a 100 word challenge about them which I showed them and they liked it a lot. We had displays of things about our grandparents around the church like the 100 word challenges and all the other classes work.

Grandparents day was a great experience for us as well as our grandparents.

Highlights of Camp

Here is my recount of my main highlights of camp:

Mt Evelyn YMCA Recreational camp is all about adventure and discovery. With activities that challenged and heights that made your stomach take a sudden drop, Mt Evelyn will definitely help you conquer your most dreaded fears.

Red faces, of course, is completely essential at camp. You will see the most peculiar things, whether it be undies on people’s heads or a chorus in unison to ‘Baa Baa Black Sheep’! Who knows, you may even see a flip or two.

The camp menu also needs to be filling and delicious, especially since we’re doing highly physical activities. At Mt Evelyn, this wasn’t a problem, the food was delectable and we had mega servings. A few food highlights on the menu consisted of, chicken schnitzel and chips, apple crumble, tacos, muffins, cake, fruit, pizza and who could forget chocolate mousse.

My cabin was full of laughs and kindness. With five of my best friends in my cabin, I felt extremely comfortable and we had so much fun.

I felt that I achieved so much at camp and I also was challenged physically and emotionally. Getting to the very top of the giant swing which was 18 metres high, jumping off the leap of faith and getting to the top in a small matter of seconds, doing the splits on the ropes and making damper!

My first school camp was definitely one to remember and all these achievements will stay with me forever. Mt Evelyn was an amazing experience!

Hi everyone,

Yesterday, all the seniors at our school went to Mt Evelyn YMCA camp for three days. It was an amazing experience and I had awesome time.

In my cabin I had my five best friends; Emma, Isabella, Helaina, Luiza and who could forget Sarah? In our cabin we had a few funny moments and interesting conversations. Lets just say I learnt a lot of new things about my friends by sleeping in a cabin with them.

Activities were awesome fun and the activities that we did were the giant swing, leap of faith, flying fox, low ropes, circus skills and damper making. My favourite activity was the giant swing.

I had an awesome time at camp and here are some photos

Celebration of Learning Day!

Hi everyone,

On Wednesday, we had Celebration of Learning day. It’s a day where we go around the school and learn about what each year level has been learning. Here is what I learnt from everyone:

Preps: The  preps have been learning about ‘Little History’ and particularly learning about their family history and have each created a family tree.

Grade one/ two: The grade one/ twos have learnt about their baptisms and have each created an informative poster about their baptism. They have also made memorial models of certain things.

Grade three/ four: The grade three/ fours have made old diaries as part of their projects based on the First Fleet.

Grade five/ six: We have been busy telling all the year levels our projects based on Australia’s first settlement. My group has made a poster, model as well as a power point..

Celebration of Learning Day was great to see how well the rest of our school has been working!

My Sports

Hi everyone,

As some of you may know, I love sport. I have played so many different sports before but my sports that I have been successful in are, netball, dance, acrobatics, high jump, cross country and 1500m. I have learnt that I’m good at the last three sports through school because being at a small school means you get lots of opportunities to try new things and realise that your good at those things.

Now I’ll tell you about each of my sports that I do outside of school:

Netball: I have always loved netball and it is definitely my greatest talent. As well as playing netball for my school I have also done the Whitehorse junior development squad and this year I’m in the Under 11’s rep team.

Dance: I have been dancing for seven years and I have been invited to rising star competitions

Acrobatics : I love acrobatics and I started it because my little cousin gave me inspiration because she goes to circus school and she can do all kinds of flips. I think I’m good at acro because I’m quite flexible.

Now you all know that sport is my greatest passion!

My 100 Word Challenge

Some of you may know about the 100 word challenge. This is where you have to write a story with one hundred words exactly. So far I have written three stories; my twist on Cinderella, a story about detectives and my story below. Also, to help us with writing  ideas, our teachers give us prompts. These prompts may be a phrase or a writing style, (like fairy tales).

This story is about a netballer:

She trudged through the mud as the sloppy brown sludge sprayed up her boots. With her faded pink netball and three chooks by her side, Ruby was ready. Ruby’s netball ring had no net and was rusty at the seams. But that would NOT stop her. Goal after goal, as her chickens chased the ball, her confidence grew. Ruby was a winner and she knew it. When she finished her daily one hundred goals, she and her chickens ran back to the barn. All at once they fell over. But they got up, after all, Ruby had to play netball.
